Most repair calls come down to a handful of problems:
Two repairs bring most softeners back. A valve rebuild replaces the worn seals, spacers and piston in the control head, which fixes leaks, constant draining and missed regenerations. A resin replacement swaps out the beads inside the tank when chlorine, iron or age has worn them out. The usual sign of tired resin is hard water even after a normal regeneration. As planning estimates, a valve rebuild typically runs $250–$500 and resin replacement $400–$800, well below the cost of a new system.
Fleck, Clack, Culligan, Kinetico, Pentair, and other common valves.
We service Fleck, Clack, Culligan, Kinetico and Pentair softeners. Many store-brand and private-label tanks use the same Fleck or Clack control valves, so we can usually repair them with standard parts. Not sure what you have? The brand and model are usually printed on the valve head. We're an independent service company and aren't affiliated with these manufacturers.
Installation and replacement when the tank or valve is past saving.
Repair usually makes sense when the tank is solid and one part has failed. Replacement starts to make sense when the softener is 10 to 15 years old, both the resin and the valve are worn, or you've paid for the same repair more than once. As planning estimates, a valve rebuild runs $250–$500, new resin $400–$800, and a full replacement $1,200–$2,800. We'll tell you which we'd do and why. See installation and replacement.
Planning ranges only: a valve rebuild runs $250–$500 and resin replacement $400–$800. See costs.
A softener needs little attention, but a periodic check catches problems before your water turns hard. A maintenance visit covers the salt level and any bridging, the brine tank, the injector and valve, a hardness test before and after, and settings that match your water. A maintenance visit typically runs $150–$250 as a planning estimate. Homes on wells with iron may need the resin cleaned more often. Between visits, keep the salt topped up, or have us deliver it.
As planning estimates, a diagnostic visit runs $99–$175, or $150–$300 with a simple fix like clearing a salt bridge or freeing a stuck float. A valve rebuild runs $250–$500 and new resin $400–$800. You get a firm price before any work starts. See our cost page.
Common causes are a power or timer problem, a failed valve motor, settings lost after a power outage, or a salt bridge that stops brine from forming. Check that the unit has power and salt first. If it still won't regenerate, call us.
Repair if the tank is sound and one part has failed. Replace if the system is 10 to 15 years old or keeps needing the same repair. We'll give you a straight answer either way.
