Water Softener & Water Treatment FAQ

Answers to common questions about water softener repair, replacement, and treatment in the Princeton area.

Common questions

How much does water softener repair cost?

As planning estimates, a diagnostic visit with a simple fix runs $150–$300, a valve rebuild $250–$500 and new resin $400–$800. You get a firm price before any work starts. See our cost page.

What are the signs a water softener needs to be replaced?

Hard water that returns after repairs, a cracked tank, resin beads in faucet screens, or a valve that keeps failing. Age matters too. See repair vs. replace.

How long does a water softener last?

Most last 10 to 15 years. Resin wears out from chlorine or iron, and valves eventually leak or fail.

Can the resin or valve be replaced instead of the whole softener?

Often, yes. If the tank is sound, new resin or a valve rebuild brings most systems back for less than a new unit. See water softener repair.

What does a water softener replacement involve?

We disconnect the old unit, set the new one, connect the supply and drain, add a bypass, program it and check for leaks. Most straightforward replacements take a few hours.

How much does a new water softener cost?

As planning estimates, a typical replacement runs $1,200–$2,800, and a softener paired with whole-home filtration runs $2,500–$4,500. See all cost ranges.

What brands do you work with?

We service Fleck, Clack, Culligan, Kinetico and Pentair softeners, plus unbranded tanks that use the same valves. We're independent and not affiliated with these manufacturers.

Do you install RO systems I bought online?

Yes. We install under-sink reverse osmosis systems you already bought, for a flat fee quoted upfront. See reverse osmosis installation.

Do you test well water?

Our free hardness test works on well water. For a full well test, including a home sale, you need a New Jersey certified lab. We can help with treatment if the results show a problem. See water testing.

Do you deliver salt?

Yes, one time or on a recurring schedule, around Princeton and nearby towns. See salt delivery.

Do you handle urgent calls?

Call and tell us what's happening. A household with no soft water, a brine tank that won't fill or salty water at the tap gets scheduled as soon as we can.

What areas do you serve?

Princeton and nearby towns in Mercer, Somerset, Middlesex and Hunterdon counties. See our service areas, or call 609-375-0287 to confirm your address.

Who does the work?

Our team, including subcontractors working under our direction. We're a growing local company, and when demand gets ahead of us, we may pass your request to a trusted partner company in the area rather than keep you waiting. If you'd rather we didn't, just tell us. Our Service & Partner Disclosure explains how it works.
