A salt-free water conditioner is a fit if you want less scale buildup without salt, a brine tank or a drain line, or if you'd rather not add sodium to your water. It changes how hardness minerals behave, so they're less likely to stick to pipes and heaters, but it doesn't remove them. Your water will still test hard, and you may still see spots. Installed, a salt-free conditioner typically runs $1,500–$3,500 as a planning estimate. If you want truly soft water, or your water has a lot of iron, a salt-based softener is the better choice.
